How to Plan Your Garden with Dollar Tree Items

03.08.2021 by simplysustainablefamily //

Learning how to plan your garden using Dollar Tree items is a fun and inexpensive winter project. I will usually treat my kids to some of their restricted screen time (usually something along the lines of Little House on the Prairie), and then set up at the dining room table.

I definitely have a few things on our homestead that I look forward to every year. These include the days the piglets and chicks arrive, the day the first calf is born, when I see the first seedling successfully poke through the soil, when the first item is ready to be harvested from the garden, and when haying is completed for the year (I get my husband back on that day). Another favorite time for me is when I start to plan my garden for the coming growing season.

Easy Sausage Lasagna with No-Boil Noodles

02.26.2021 by simplysustainablefamily //

Every family has their own idea of what “fast food” is for them. For some, it may be a stop at Burger King. For others, it may be a boxed meal from the store. My own standard for fast food would still be considered “from scratch” by most people. I consider fast food to be any meal where I am not making the individual ingredients. Basically, a meal that I can pull the ingredients from my pantry or freezer, combine them, and cook and serve it without any additional preparation. This easy Sausage Lasagna recipe uses no-boil noodles for an even quicker process (with less dishes too!). It is one of my favorite fast-food recipes. The ingredients are simple, fairly healthy for a quick meal, and make good leftovers to send with my husband for lunch the next day.

How to Rebuild an IH 1066 Axle and Steering

02.21.2021 by simplysustainablefamily //

For Warren, perfecting how to rebuild this IH 1066 axle and steering has been a fun winter project. He has many memories with this family tractor. This was the first full-size farm tractor his grandfather ever purchased. It spent many years running a silage chopper for dairy and beef cattle. And, he spent many hours riding on the fender while his grandfather operated it. After about 50 years of farming, his grandfather recently retired. We had the privilege of buying two of his tractors, including this old workhorse. Warren’s latest project has been to restore it to a fully functional and dependable haying tractor. Follow along as he rebuilds the front axle, upgrades the steering, installs safety lights, and replaces some of the original electrical.

Warren has the hood side panel removed here. He has turned part of our old dairy barn into a repair shop for his tractors and machinery.
