What Causes Black Broccoli Heads: How to Prevent Broccoli Soft Rot

09.21.2022 by simplysustainablefamily //

Every time I think I have seen everything my garden can throw at me, I have to eat my words. My garden is a challenge that constantly changes. This year, our Maine weather has been odd to say the least. We had pretty intense drought conditions in the spring when it is normally wet. And, then we had heavy rainstorms throughout the month of August when it is usually dry. Because of these weather conditions, I have encountered some brand new issues in my garden. One of these new issues has been Broccoli Soft Rot. Broccoli Soft Rot (aka Head Rot) is what causes Black Broccoli Heads. So, let’s take a moment to look at what causes Broccoli Soft Rot and how to help prevent it in the future.

How to Make a DIY Tree Guard for Fruit Trees

10.05.2021 by simplysustainablefamily //

Learning to combat Pests of all kinds is an essential skill to have when you live on a homestead. We battle foxes and coyotes, bugs, rodents, weasels, and birds on a daily basis. We have to take them into consideration with every building project and gardening endeavor. (And, don’t get me wrong, I know these creatures also have very useful qualities and are an essential part of our world. It just doesn’t mean that I prefer to have weasels in my chicken coop or potato beetles in my garden). But, out of all of these pests, the most challenging may be the Field Mice or Voles. They can completely destroy a root crop garden in a matter of a couple days, or girdle a small orchard overnight. They can travel and eat both above ground and below. And, they are active during all seasons of the year. Over the years, we have found various ways of combating them. One of these is to make a DIY Tree Guard for the Fruit Trees in our orchard.

Are Dollar Tree Seeds Good or Bad?

07.14.2021 by simplysustainablefamily //

Well, that depends. I know, that is not a straight-forward answer. Before this year, I would have immediately answered that Dollar Tree seeds are a good choice for just about everything. But, as I will discuss further on in this post, I had one really sour experience with them this year.
