Vegan Pumpkin Sourdough Pancake Recipe with an Egg Substitute

10.31.2022 by simplysustainablefamily //

Vegan is definitely not a term that comes up very often in our household. We proudly raise grass-fed beef cows, pigs, and chickens on our homestead. So, we are avid meat eaters when it comes to clean and healthy meat. But, I recently had a friend visit us from my hometown of St. Louis City. She had started a vegan lifestyle, and was really pleased with how her body and health responded to it. One of the mornings that she was here, I wanted to make pancakes for breakfast. But, my typical sourdough pancake recipe uses butter and eggs. This dilemma quickly became a fun experiment for me. I decided to further challenge myself because, like most red-blooded Americans, I like Pumpkin in the fall. And, that is how my Vegan Pumpkin Sourdough Pancake Recipe was born (using the yummiest egg substitute).

How to Make Thai Sweet Chili Sauce and Dressing from Scratch

05.31.2021 by simplysustainablefamily //

I do not know who the genius was that first discovered the incredibly delicious relationship between sweet and spicy. But, Sweet Chili Sauce is one of the classic examples of this pairing. Now, I have a rather weak mouth when it comes to spicy foods. So, I prefer my Sweet Chili Sauce to be about 60 percent sweet, 30 percent spicy, and 10 percent tangy or sour. I will show you how to make a Thai Sweet Chili Sauce and Dressing from scratch with kitchen staples you probably already have in your pantry.

The Sauce works well on meat, pasta, rice, and other main dishes. The Salad Dressing brings a unique flavor to any green or vegetable salad, and can even be used on cooked vegetables.

Best Meatloaf with Grape Juice: Sweet and Savory Meatloaf

05.24.2021 by simplysustainablefamily //

Meatloaf is a classic main dish for many families, including mine. It is versatile and forgiving, so I can adapt it to fit the ingredients I have available at the time. However, it has never been one of my favorite recipes. Frankly, I usually find meatloaf pretty boring. The flavor tends to be very basic or even shallow. I end up trying to compensate for that by putting ketchup on it, or serving it with spicy or sweet side dishes. But, this week, my toddler requested “meatloaf” for dinner. It became my goal for that day to develop a meatloaf recipe that was both sweet and savory and definitely not boring. The result was a meatloaf with grape juice, multiple savory spices, and a drizzle of maple syrup.
